Chandan Roy Sanyal: Aashram raises socially relevant questions about faith

Posted on 1 Sep 2020 02:11:00 GMT - web-series

Actor Chandan Roy Sanyal recalls having an immersive and fun experience while working on the web series Aashram, which, he feels, raises socially relevant questions about faith.

The series revolves around the corruption and crime that happens under the guise of faith. In the Prakash Jha directorial, which recently released on OTT, Chandan essays the role of the main aide to and partner-in-crime of a conniving self-styled godman Baba Nirala, played by Bobby Deol.

Chandan shared that while Baba is the face of the Aashram, his character Bhopa Swami carries out the operations.

"'Aashram' raises socially relevant questions about faith and how far scammers of faith go for their greed. It was an immersive and fun experience to be someone who would stop at nothing to satiate their avarice. A big thanks to viewers and critics for conveying their appreciation," said Chandan.

Makers kicking off work on Breathe 3: Back to business with Bachchan Jr

Posted on 1 Sep 2020 01:45:34 GMT - web-series

Abhishek Bachchan's Breathe 2 may have opened to unflattering reviews upon its July release, but the suits at Amazon Prime Video maintained that it was one of the most watched series on the platform. Now, the head honchos of the streaming giant seem to be putting their money where their mouth is. Buzz is that Abundantia Entertainment, the production house behind the crime thriller, is set to begin work on its third season.

Defending the sophomore season, producer Vikram Malhotra says, "Amazon rarely goes on record to talk about any of their shows, but the [top brass] has talked about how Breathe 2 received tremendous love from the audience. I respect the opinion of critics, who thought the series was simplistic, convenient and not pacy enough. But, at the end of the day, I will quote what Amazon says: All that matters to us is what the customers are saying. The pace and length of a show are subjective. Plus, slow burn appeals to a huge section of the audience."

Vikram Malhotra

Although the producer remains tight-lipped about the third instalment, he acknowledges that the second edition — which also featured Amit Sadh and Nithya Menen — was designed to pave the way for a larger story. "We have intentionally left it at a point where we have the option of taking the story ahead. The [season] finale ends with C-16 and we want people to keep guessing what it is. The cliffhanger was the most debated point of the show."

Indian rural audience has grown enormously and so has OTT

Posted on 31 Aug 2020 12:49:44 GMT - web-series

From complete entertainment shows to compelling movies for a targeted audience; this new era of platform called the Over-the-Top (OTT) is rising enormously in India. Various platforms of OTT have allowed audiences to view diverse global premium content along with experimenting genres. They offer a twofold promise and are delivering the combined power of TV with the agility and scale of the global internet.

With the continued rising growth in streaming platforms, their service providers have gone better. Be it content or diversity, the competition among contemporaries is healthy and highly competitive.

Nachiket Pantvaidya, CEO ALTBalaji, and Group COO Balaji Telefilms said, "There has been substantial growth in the subscription of ALTBalaji even before the lockdown had begun, and more importantly during the three months of lockdown. As per statistics, India's tier 2 & 3 towns have seen an upswing of internet users that has been hugely beneficial to the OTT platforms."

"The last few months have been beneficial, in terms of content and subscribers' growth. The growing demand for new seasons of the popular shows including, Baarish 2 and Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain 3, among others, have also added to the brand popularity. Post lockdown, the target is to launch two shows every month, and we have got around 10-12 shows that are in various stages of production. We are the No 1 player with 62 original shows in various genres, and we will continue fuelling that position by putting more shows on our platform," he concludes.

Providing content limited to the Indian entertainment industry, ALTBalaji has shown massive growth ever since its inception and this lockdown has added feathers to its already growing subscribers. What's working for ALT is their personalisation techniques to understand their user base. Running the television successfully for more than two decadces has given a sense of understanding to the makers of ALTBalaji that what works best for the Indian audiences. Even though their contemporaries are offering global and oscar winning content, ALT Balaji offers regional and local content which justifies the current demand of the viewers. Additionally through technology, they track user's interests and come up with relevant programs.

As a platform, Alt Balaji has deepened audience engagement with new content and video experiences. The addiction to OTT has grown enormously and so has the Indian audience contributing to it.

Masaba Masaba Review: Bold, bossy Masaba Gupta is a 'hot mess'

Posted on 30 Aug 2020 03:50:21 GMT - web-series

Masaba Masaba
On: Netflix

Director: Sonam Nair
Cast: Masaba Gupta, Neena Gupta, Neil Bhoopalam
Rating: review

Masaba Masaba, starring Neena Gupta and her daughter Masaba, is a fictionalised account of the mother-daughter duo's life. The show kept us looking forward to the weekend, and it is worth the watch! The trailer launched by the makers earlier this month gave us a glimpse of bossy, fearless and extremely chic fashion designer Masaba Gupta's life and the chaos within.

Masaba Gupta has a normal messed-up life, just like any of us. If you think being 'messed-up' isn't normal, then what is? We all make decisions which don't turn out in our favour all the time, and that's what Masaba goes through in her late 20s. Masaba has a lot of a mess created by her inadequate communication skills and wrong decision-making.

Just like us, Masaba Gupta too can't decide what she wants from life, can't live without her mother either, yet calls herself independent. Despite failing to manage her professional and personal life, woohoo, we have all survived, and so does she! A lot of times owning to our mistakes does not even occur to us; sometimes we do it on purpose, at times, we ignore everything and walking away from every situation seems like the perfect thing to do. Well, that is what Masaba Gupta's life is all about. She can't decide (just like us) even when it comes to sharing an Instagram post (extremely relatable) or even support her friend when she truly needs someone in her life. We all are 'Poo' from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... in our own way, who is truly living a chaotic life.

Watch the trailer of Masaba Masaba here:

In the show too, Masaba Gupta goes through a separation, her life falls apart and yet she tries hard to make it work in all aspects - personally and professionally. The fashion designer has deadlines to meet, avoid the media glare, shut the noise by posting what she thinks.

Neena-Masaba, the mother-daughter duo will make you appreciate your relationship with your mom, those little fights which don't make any sense after a while, and also, her sarcasm which is on fleek! All mothers are the same, they care too much, they love too much, and nothing can stop them from doing that, not even stardom.

Neena Gupta too comes in as a huge surprise. The actress, in 2017, shared on Instagram how she desires to work once again, and that's where her professional life takes a huge turn. Well-established in their own space and field of work, the mother-daughter makes sure to support each other in every step.

The six-episode series Masaba Masaba is truly a must-watch, especially with your mom. It's hilarious, its emotional, and the tongue-in-cheek humour will make you realise how precious your bond is with mommy dearest. Masaba Gupta comes in as a huge surprise in terms of acting. Well, it's true, it is in the genes! Her digital debut moves so swiftly, making her character stand out and relatable to many.

Binge on this one before August ends, and have your popcorn session this weekend. The younger Masaba, the help (Sunita Rajwar), her friend Gia (Rytasha Rathore) and colleague (Neil Bhoopalam), every character does justice to this mini-series.

Neena Gupta: Apologised to Masaba for stopping her from being an actor

Posted on 30 Aug 2020 01:43:43 GMT - web-series

Despite acting for almost four decades in films, television, theatre and web shows, Neena Gupta admits she harboured fears when approached for Masaba Masaba. Her cause of concern—daughter Masaba who is making her acting debut with the Netflix series. "I was sceptical about how we would play ourselves on screen. Masaba had never acted before, so I wondered if she could pull it off," reasons the veteran.

The series is a scripted version of the ace designer's life as she navigates her professional and personal journey. Even as she guided Masaba during the initial readings, Gupta refrained from providing one too many tips. "During script readings, Masaba would go too fast. I had to tell her to pause and understand every nuance. [But once the cameras rolled], I did not interfere in any scene."

Having watched the show, the veteran says that Masaba has come alive on screen. "I apologised to her for stopping her from being an actor," says Gupta, who knew her daughter harboured aspirations of joining Bollywood. However, Gupta had then dissuaded her by telling her that she would be stereotyped in films. Now, she hopes Masaba will give acting a shot while handling her business.

Though the show borrows heavily from their lives, Gupta was certain that she did not want to offend those close to her with the offering. "From our first meeting with writer-director Sonam Nair and showrunner Ashvini Yardi, we drove home the point that we did not want to be bitter about anyone. But my husband [Vivek Mehra] may be offended as the actor playing him looks much older," she laughs.

There is no reference to Masaba's father, Vivian Richards in the series. Probe her on it, and she says, "There was no need [to mention him]. The story does not begin from her birth, but at a later stage in her life."

Neena Gupta: I have heard about big stars who suddenly don't have any work

Posted on 28 Aug 2020 04:32:50 GMT - web-series

A National Award-winner with a career spanning more than 35 years, Gupta made her mark in films like "Trikal", "Mandi" and "Utsav" in the 80s. She rose to further acclaim with the 1998 TV shows "Saans" and "Siski" but work eventually slowed down in the 2000s, before she bounced back with consecutive hits, starting from Anubhav Sinha's "Mulk" and Amit Sharma's "Badhaai Ho" in 2018.

"The struggle never ends for anybody. From the top actors to the ones who aren't famous, it's the same. That's what keeps you on your toes and I enjoy that sometimes. You can never be lazy. If a film becomes a hit, for one-two years you'll bask in the glory and then what?" Gupta told PTI.

In 2017, the actor took to Instagram to ask for work, which eventually led her to bag "Mulk" and kickstart her second innings with films like "Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan" and "Panga".
The 61-year-old star said not everyone is keen to ask for work.

"I have heard about big stars who suddenly don't have any work. Some of them get up and ask for work, some don't and then they fizzle out. In this field, the struggle is forever." The actor is now gearing up for her Netflix series, "Masaba Masaba", where she has teamed up with her fashion designer daughter Masaba.

The show is based on real-life moments of the duo and offers a peek into their journey, with references and anecdotes set against a fictional backdrop. On the show, she plays Masaba's mother, an actor navigating her way in the industry despite being told she's a past struggle. Gupta said this happened to her when she wanted to be back on screen after she took a break post her marriage in 2008.

"For ten years, I didn't work because I wanted to relax, live life comfortably. I didn't want to work to earn money. But then I also realised that I needed to work for myself and that's when I wrote the Instagram post, looking for work, calling up people."

"One day my husband said, 'What's the need now? You have done so much, ab kya zaroorat hai?' I told him I want to do it because it is my need. So this did happen to me." Apart from drawing from their life, the show also presents the functioning of the film and fashion world. Gupta said when she sat down to chat with the writers and director Sonam Nair, a line was drawn on what to spill and what to avoid.

"We told them about our lives, funny, serious all kinds of anecdotes. I remember when the script came, at one point I felt this is not showing a particular character in a good light. That it was a bit too much and not to my taste. I conveyed that to Sonam. It is a fun show, yes, but it should not cross the decency level which we were very careful about."

The show marks the acting debut of Masaba and Gupta said though they were playing mother-daughter with references to their own lives, the lines "never blurred." "Before I started I was sceptical. I was also nervous for Masaba because it was her first time acting. But on set, it felt like I am doing just another role. If Masaba was with me in a scene, I would look at her and find her in that character.

"It was not a nervous daughter looking at her actor mother, asking, 'Now what to do?' Because of Masaba's confidence, I felt at ease," she added. With Ashvini Yardi as a showrunner, "Masaba Masaba" also features Neil Bhoopalam, Rytasha Rathore and Samran Sahu. The show starts streaming on Netflix from August 28.
