Arjun Bijlani on playing a NSG Commando: I lost a lot of weight for the role

Posted on 2 Aug 2020 06:45:27 GMT - web-series

For his first web series State of Siege: 26/11, Arjun Bijlani got into the shoes of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a NSG Commando, and played the character of Major Nikhil Manikrishnan. He says a sense of patriotism kicks in once you wear the uniform and adds that it gets you in a different mode. State of Siege: 26/11, which premiered on ZEE5 Original, gives a detailed account of the terror attack in Mumbai that happened on November 26, 2008. The show is based on Sandeep Unnithan's book "Black Tornado: The Three Sieges of Mumbai 26/11" and was directed by Matthew Leutwyler.

Arjun said, "When you wear that uniform, it gets you into a different mode altogether. You automatically start feeling a sense of responsibility towards your nation and that feeling of patriotism kicks in. We all are patriotic but to wear that uniform, it is a feeling of inner strength, responsibility, and there is that whole aura about the uniform which you feel."

"There is a one-shot sequence for which I rehearsed for 13-14 hours, so it was an amazing feeling. And these people do this every day, and I was so exhausted, by the end of the day," he added.

Arjun Bijlani

When asked how he prepared for the role, he said, "Fitness was one thing, I lost a lot of weight to look like a Commando. Then there was weapon training which I took from Lt Col (Retd.) Sandeep Sen, there was mental training as well, because Commandos need to be mentally very strong. Lt Col (Retd) Sandeep Sen told us how important it is to be mentally fit because one wrong move and you could lose your life. So, you need to be alert at all times."

Arjun Bijlani

"How you need to move, how you need to walk, what is the feeling when you are going for a mission, and you know you are going out there and you may lose your life. So, we took a lot of mental, and physical training, and I was on for the show. Even while shooting he was always there to guide us and to tell us how that movement was when it actually happened in real-time. So that really helped us get through the series," he added.

Talking about his equation with the director, Arjun said that they got along really well and mentioned that his words encouraged and motivated him to work harder even in his future projects. "Matthew and I got along really well. And in fact, he used to tell me that Arjun I really love it when you are on the set because you exactly understand my instruction, you know what I want from you and you deliver it, and if I have to make any changes you understand that as well. And that's what an actor and director relationship should be. We used to go out for lunch. We never had any arguments, we sailed through so beautifully, and in fact, we even became friends after that," he said.

The promotions of "State of Siege: 26/11" were cancelled due to the nationwide lockdown, but the actor says they had faith in the show because it beautifully captured the 60-hour siege that happened.

Arjun Bijlani

"We were supposed to travel to five cities, it all got cancelled. We were just hoping that since everyone was at home during the lockdown, people would watch it through word of mouth. But we didn't know it would be loved so much that it was actually the most-watched web series at one point. And for years to come, this show will always be there, and people are going to relive what happened on 26/11 through this show because it beautifully captures the 60-hour siege that happened from all angles," Arjun signed off.

This Friendship day, here's a list of inseparable buddies from our favourite TV Series

Posted on 2 Aug 2020 02:38:15 GMT - web-series

What would we do without our besties? We've had our adventures and they are a little bit more interesting because they’ve been with our favourite people in the world. Our best friends have been there through it all with us — the road trips, the reckless nights, and the rent bills because now that we're all grown up that's a thing. Whether it's with a wacky neighbour, a roommate, or a co-worker, strong friendships are the heart of some of our favourite television shows. Romantic interests may come and go, but the dynamic between our favourite characters and their closest pals is the secret to how successful they are.

While you may not be solving Crime like Jake and Charles or creating history with your research like Sheldon and Leonard, we’re sure you have a Joey to your Chandler or Abbi to your Ilana. From mysteries to comedies, we’re sure you’ll relate to some of the most famous friendships on television.

So this Friendships Day, we present ten of the most heart-warming friendships from popular shows that will keep you coming back for more:

Joey and Chandler – F.R.I.E.N.D.S

friendship-day

If 2 people have proved time and again that nothing can get in between their friendship, it has to be Chandler and Joey. Even when Chandler kissed Kathy and when Joey got inside the entertainment centre causing them to get robbed, they eventually forgive each other and want only what is the best for the other. Joey moving out during Days of our Lives, Chandler buying the big white horse, Chandler moving in with Monica and Joey keeping Chandler and Monica’s secret are just some of the most beautiful moments from their friendship reel. Could two friends love each other more? The answer is no because Joey and Chandler will forever be "best buds." Join their friendship journey on Comedy Central.

Lorelai and Sookie – Gilmore Girls

friendship-day

Who wouldn't want a best friend who cooks amazing food for you to eat while you gossip about anything and everything? We should all be so lucky to have a Sookie in our lives. While they met each other through years of working in the same establishment, their bond grew so thick that even their dream was to continue working together by opening their inn! Who wouldn’t love to work with their A-team all the time? Catch the quirky friends live their dream on Netflix

Sheldon and Leonard – The Big Bang Theory

friendship-day

Leonard and Sheldon’s friendship was always the backbone of the friend circle in The Big Bang Theory. Their friendship never fizzled out of interest over the twelve years we saw them together. Starting as roommates, the two grew close. Sheldon and Leonard had been living together for long enough for Sheldon to be almost entirely dependent on Leonard, and for Leonard to be utterly numb to Sheldon’s wild requests. But theirs is a friendship we’d all love to have – staying friends with someone even after knowing how they can be. Tune in to Comedy Central and catch the bickering friends get through life with each other’s help.

Jake and Charles – Brooklyn Nine-Nine

friendship-day

The relationships between the officers at the Brooklyn’s Ninety-ninth precinct is responsible for some of the funniest and most sentimental moments of the show — but the friendship between Jake and Boyle is a fan favourite. Is there anything better than an awe-inspiring, perfect, majestic bromance? Maybe that's part of the reason we're so obsessed with Brooklyn Nine-Nine's bromance between Jake Peralta and Charles Boyle, a.k.a. "The Night Boyz." They support each others’ weird habits and traits while encouraging each other to be the best version of themselves. Catch the best friends on Comedy Central.

Abbi and Ilana – Broad City

friendship-day

Like most iconic TV duos, Ilana and Abbi’s personalities complement each other. Ilana is the "wild" one: Cheerful, pansexual, highly flexible, up for anything, anytime. Abbi is more strategic: a creative but anxious over-thinker whose concerns were often calmed by her best friend's constant support. Together, they deal with the best and worst of New York City, including roommates whose boyfriends crash on the couch rent-free, bosses who expect them to work, subway misadventures, and (of course) bed bugs. Head over to Voot Select today and watch how they don’t let anything get in the way of their friendship.

Will and Grace – Will and Grace

friendship-day

Will and Grace; you can't have one without the other. They are roommates and best friends; not only do they have one of the best friendships on television, but they have been friends for so long they’ve become like a family to one another. The fact that the two have opposite personalities seems to make their friendship work, as they somehow balance each other out. Tune in to Comedy Central and watch the duo get through thick and thin.

Churails' power packed trailer makes a strong point on misogyny

Posted on 31 Jul 2020 15:21:16 GMT - web-series

ZEE5 received augmentative response and love from media and fans alike after the recent announced of 'CHURAILS', the very first Zindagi Original. Soon after, netizens shared positive comments and reactions on the poster and now ZEE5 launched the trailer of the most awaited web series 'CHURAILS' on social media, check it out!

Check out the trailer here:

The trailer depicts a strong and unconventional narrative packed with gripping and exciting moments of four women from different backgrounds with their unique stories. CHURAILS narrates the story of four self-proclaimed churails who come together to open a covert detective agency hidden under the shop Halal Designs. They set a path to expose cheating husbands amongst the city's elite. As their operations expand, they come to be the saviors of abused, harassed and mistreated women. The fast-paced storyline covers myriad issues such as child abuse, sexism, domination of class and race.

"'CHURAILS' is a story of four strong women characters but it depicts what each and every woman deals with - not just in a particular country but globally. These characters have empowered us and I'm sure even the ones who watch it will feel the same connect. We're glad that it's going to be seen by people worldwide!" expressed Yasra Rizvi

"Batool had me at hello. She was cool, fearless and unflinching. She was the friend I'd want to get me out of trouble. And get me out of trouble she did. Playing her has empowered me in lasting ways. We're in the business of entertainment, I know, but this sisterhood of Churails, playing this part is my way of telling women that I'm here and I have their back. We're all still living in some version of classic Greek tragedy but these Trojan women are going to kick ass." expressed Nimran Bucha

"Churails is about having a realisation of what all you can do as a woman. It gives an understanding, insight, awareness, and complete realness of life through the characters and the story. The story is very well written and fabulously directed by Asim Abbasi, he literally took our breath away with his work. It has been an amazing feeling to be part of the super revolutionary change that this project is going to bring. I think Pakistani media will certainly change after Churails. Churails as a show has a lot of caliber and details to catch eyeballs at the international level. I would like to thank Zee5, Zee5 Global and Zindagi official that has given Churails a cherry on top. It was a fabulous journey to be a part of."expressed Sarwat Gilani

"Playing Zubaida has been a personal milestone of my career. She taught me the value of being a protector, the importance of sisterhood and she is, in essence, a fearless warrior who is so compassionate that seeing other women in jeopardy keeps her up at night." Expressed Mehar Bano

'CHURAILS' will break stereotypes, and challenge the hypocrisy of patriarchal societies. Directed by critically acclaimed director, Asim Abbasi, 'CHURAILS' brings together a talented ensemble cast led by Sarwat Gilani, Nimra Bucha, Mehar Bano and Yasra Rizvi for this power-packed narrative.

'CHURAILS' is set to premiere on ZEE5 on 11th August.

Undekhi Season 2 being written by the creator, Siddharth Sengupta

Posted on 31 Jul 2020 05:54:33 GMT - web-series

Hailed as one of the best crime thrillers to come out of the OTT space in recent times, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Harsh Chhaya and Surya Sharma-starrer SonyLIV crime drama had a stupendous first run. As rumours of the second season intensifies, the director Ashish R Shukla recently confirmed that it's in fact in the works. "Yes it's being written by the creator of the show Siddharth Sengupta," he told mid-day.

Talking about the show, Ashish said, "What drew me to Undekhi is the unabashed writing and ability to tell a story of amorality so well. Unlike any conventional thriller it's more of a human story where every character is on the edge and on the brink of breaking their world apart. We have our great actors like Harsh Chhaya, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Surya Sharma, Ankur Rathi and an excellent ensemble of performers and many new faces as a surprise. The cast including everyone went through rigorous workshops to crack their characters before hitting the set and the experience of watching them flourish has been rewarding."

The experience wasn't without challenges though, he affirms. "One of the biggest challenges was to justify the characters with such a huge new cast and every character was complex and demanding so we all worked over it. Apart from that we had weather issues during the shoot that were nightmares, from rain to snowfall to extremely cold weather and many actors had to wear single layer costumes. But the energy of the cast and crew overpowered these challenges."

Now, surgical strikes on web

Posted on 31 Jul 2020 01:37:57 GMT - web-series

Almost one-and-a-half years after Vicky Kaushal's Uri: The Surgical Strike offered a retelling of the 2016 surgical strikes that were conducted in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Amit Sadh has revisited the episode with his web series, Avrodh: The Siege Within. Creative producer Samar Khan reveals that the nine-part series is based on Rahul Singh and Shiv Aroor's book, India's Most Fearless.

"We had the book as the blueprint, so developing the show was easy. Additionally, we spoke to many military officers who were directly or indirectly involved in the operation. Our biggest responsibility was to get the facts correct. We have taken cinematic liberties, but we didn't want anything to be misrepresented," states Khan, who researched the subject for eight months before taking the Sony LIV show on floors.

Though the military operation has been depicted on the big screen with the Kaushal-starrer, Khan is not worried about comparisons. "We were conscious about the subject being tackled already. However, this is a different medium, so the treatment differs," says the creative producer, adding that Sadh was the only choice for the lead. "His passion for the craft motivates everyone to strive for excellence."

Akshay Kumar's digital debut will go on floors by second half of 2021

Posted on 31 Jul 2020 01:08:53 GMT - web-series

In March 2019, Akshay Kumar had announced his foray into the digital world with the Amazon Prime Video action thriller, The End. At the event — which also saw the superstar setting himself on fire as part of the stunts planned for the evening — Jennifer Salke, head, Amazon Studios, had expressed her excitement about the series as she stated, "The scale at which The End is being conceived is enormous. The storyline and the action sequences have been brilliantly crafted."

The series, one of the biggest projects for the streaming giant's Indian arm, was to go on floors in 2020. However, with the pandemic playing spoilsport, the shoot of the ambitious venture has been deferred by seven months. "The show was to roll in December tentatively, with Akshay joining us in January 2021. But, it has been four months [into the lockdown], and it will be a few more months before normalcy is restored. Akshay, too, has other commitments. So, we are hoping to get into production by the second half of 2021," says producer Vikram Malhotra of Abundantia Entertainment.

Vikram Malhotra
Vikram Malhotra

Malhotra says the team is mindful that the series be mounted on a scale befitting the superstar. "It isn't a project that we, as makers, can tweak and start [shooting] next month. We've used the time to improve the material." While the show was to be filmed in India and key locations abroad, he admits that the venues can only be finalised "after the situation stabilises."

For now, the producer has his eyes on Shakuntala Devi that drops online today. The makers had faced much criticism when they, like director Shoojit Sircar, sought a digital premiere of their film. "The director, actors, writers and other producers unanimously decided that it was best not to hold off the release, given the uncertain times. Vidya [Balan] and I wanted the story to be told to the audience because our material was ready by March."
